“Double Beat” is a modern adaptation of a classic double stroke exercise. Double
strokes are two consecutive strokes played on the same hand at a full height. It begins
with the snares and basses playing the double stroke melody while the tenors play a
sixteenth note supporting rhythm. Later the instrumentation rolls are reversed. This
teaches the drummers to understand how to control the rebound and tempo of the
double strokes so they stay in time with the sixteenth note rhythm. As the exercise
continues more instruments are added to help create an exciting dynamic growth,
culminating in “double stops” (both right and left hand striking at the same time) for the
snares and tenors. Mallets play the sixteenth note supporting rhythm in a “c” scale, and
then join the ensemble rhythm with chords. This exercise comes with a play along video for snare, tenor, and mallets at both full speed and 75% speed.
